SDS/2 Provides Framework for Detroit Medical Center Heart Hospital

When the new $78-million, 190,000-square-foot Detroit Medical Center Heart Hospital opens in early 2014, Design Data's SDS/2 software will have played an important role in the six-story project.

Meeting the project's challenges required collaboration between Harley Ellis Devereaux (HED) — the project's structural engineer — and Douglas Steel Fabricating Corporation — the project's fabricator — via SDS/2.

HED's Autodesk® Revit® model was translated into a CIS/2 model and imported into SDS/2, saving a significant amount of time and providing increased model accuracy. Using SDS/2, Douglas Steel automatically designed connections for each beam, brace, column and framing condition, which enabled HED engineers to quickly validate the connection capacities against the required values.

SDS/2 was also pivotal in the shop drawing review process as well, allowing HED to quickly review the drawings without using added time and resources to print and comb through thousands of erection and detail sheets.
