The United States' first major wire suspension bridge was opened to traffic 71 years ago in Fairmount, Pennsylvania. The 358-foot bridge had no toll and stood for more than 30 years, until it was replaced by the double-decker Callowhill Street Bridge. Read more about this bridge on ASCE’s website.
